Most people know that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and have read or skimmed through some of its articles. However there is much more to discover about Wikipedia that goes on behind the scenes, so let’s get started!
Use the search box (top right) to go to an article. Search for example for the article on Doctors Without Borders.
Check how the article is structured and pay attention to how headers, subtitles, references, pictures and text formatting are used.
Note in particular that some words are in blue and underlined when you hover over them. These are links to other articles.
Some of these links are also red, which means that the article is not written yet. What happens if you click on one of these links? You can always return to the original page by using the back arrow on your browser.
Next you can click on the Wikipedia logo in the upper left corner. Where does that take you?
See also the menu with the many links on the left hand side of the page. This menu is shown on all pages of Wikipedia. Click on the various links and see where you end up.
At the bottom of each article you can see what categories the article is in. Clicking the categories will take you to articles that are related to the article you just visited.
Wikipedia allows its readers to write articles. This is done by clicking on a button called "Edit". Have you found the "Edit" button? This is what it looks like:
