Wikipedia is a collaboration between many users. Communication with them is important and can be done in many different ways. The most important are the articles talk pages and each user's talk page. Articles talk pages are edited in the same way as regular articles, but on them you sign the comments that you make so that others will be able to follow who wrote what.
- Make sure you are logged in. Your username will then be among the links at the top right.
- Ask other participants about their username. Let's say it's "Example user".
- In the search box on the right, type in User:Example user.
- What does Example user tell about herself/himself on the user side?
- In the left menu, click the link "User contributions". Has Example user made some interesting edits?
- Click on the "Discussion" button at the top, next to Example user's name.
- If there already was a discussion page, click on the "New Topic" button.
- Type in the box: How fun that you're on Wikipedia! Then add the template {{nb}} and finish with ~~~~.
- Click the "Save" button below the text box.
- The template you just added should now have become general tips to just a beginner (nb) on Wikipedia.
- The four tilde characters (~~~~) should now have become a signature, that is your own username and date.
- Ask Example user to go to any page on Wikipedia. Only then will an orange plate notify Example user that (s)he has received a new message.
- When you come to a new article, there may be an orange sign at the height of the article name. It says that you have a new message. Click on any of the links in the message. This takes you to the text that someone has sent you. Read it.
- Click on "Edit" next to the section title.
- Write a reply message in the edit box. Move in your message by starting with one or more colon (:) - always one more than the last post. End the message by adding your signature and a time stamp, you can do this simply by adding ~~~~ at the end of the message.
- Click "Save".
One of Wikipedia's basic rules is that those who contribute to Wikipedia should be friendly. For beginners there are also mentors ready to answer questions and show you the way.
For more information on the talk pages, see this explanation.
The central discussion site on Wikipedia, where issues that effects many articles or users are discussed, is called the Village pump.
