Start editing Wikipedia

Wikipedia may never be perfect, but it is constantly improving. By becoming one of the volunteers writing on Wikipedia, you will help to disseminate the knowledge you have to thousands of people. The first step to take is to learn to edit the articles.

Exercise

Look up any subject you know well, for example your own home town. Use the search box at the top right corner of the page to find the article in question.
See if there are for example typos or grammatical mistakes, which are easy to correct, or maybe the article is missing something more obvious.
Click on the "Edit" button in the upper right corner of the page, next to the search box.
Check how the article looks like in the editing mode. How are the headlines marked? Where are the sources? How do the links look like?
Correct the errors you found, or add the missing information.
Write a short description of what you did in the edit summary box at the end of the edit box.
Press "Show Preview"!
Save if it looks good.

As you probably noticed, in the edit box there are many different characters and symbols. On this page these are explained in more detail.

Wikipedia is very transparent. Anyone can follow all the edits you and everyone else does. See here for a more detailed description of transparency in Wikipedia.

Wikipedia has five basic rules that all writers must follow. The rules say, among other things, that the articles have to be and that no one may steal and use any copyrighted materials.
