William Roughead (1870 – 1952) var en skotsk advokat, amatörkriminolog, redaktör och essäskrivare. Han var en viktig tidig true crime-författare.[1]
Enligt Joyce Carol Oates var Rougheads inflytande "enormt". Hans berättelser om mordfall och rättegångar var kortfattade och har jämförts med folksagor på grund av dess moraliserande.[2] Rougheads kanske största prestation var hans analys av Oscar Slaters rättegång för mordet på Marion Gilchrist 1908. Roughead hjälpte Arthur Conan Doyle, Craigie Aitchison och William Park i nästan 20 år och avslöjade svagheter i kronans fall och, citerades även som vittne i överklagandet av domen från 1928.[1]
Som Luc Sante beskrev i introduktionen till Classic Crimes (2000), en samling av Rougheads essäer, skilde sig Roughhead från en stor mängd samtida brottsförfattare:[3]
