presenting the project Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory
[redigera | redigera wikitext]Hello everyone,
My name is Marc Miquel and I am a researcher from Barcelona (Universitat Pompeu Fabra).
While I was doing my PhD I studied whether an identity-based motivation could be important for editor participation and I analyzed content representing the editors' cultural context in 40 Wikipedia language editions.
Few months later, I propose creating the Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory in order to raise awareness on Wikipedia’s current state of cultural diversity, providing datasets, visualizations and statistics, and pointing out solutions to improve intercultural coverage.
I am presenting this project to a grant and I expect that the site becomes a useful tool to help communities create more multicultural encyclopaedias and bridge the content culture gap that exists across language editions (one particular type of systemic bias).
For instance, this would help spreading cultural content local to Swedish Wikipedia into the rest of Wikipedia language editions, and viceversa, make Swedish Wikipedia much more multicultural.
Here is the link of the project proposal: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wikipedia_Cultural_Diversity_Observatory_(WCDO)
I am searching for a volunteer in each language community: I still need one for the Swedish Wikipedia. If you feel like it, you can contact me at: marcmiquel *at* gmail.com
I need a contact in your every community who can (1) check the quality of the cultural context article list I generate to be imported-exported to other language editions, (2) test the interface/data visualizations in their language, and (3) communicate the existance of the tool/site when ready to the language community and especially to those editors involved in projects which could use it or be aligned with it.
Communicating it might not be a lot of work, but it will surely have a greater impact if done in native language! :).
If you like the project, I'd ask you to endorse it. In any case, I will appreciate any feedback, comments,... Thanks in advance for your time!
Best regards,

[redigera | redigera wikitext]New print to pdf feature for mobile web readers
[redigera | redigera wikitext]New print to pdf feature for mobile web readers
The Readers web team will be deploying a new feature this week to make it easier to download PDF versions of articles on the mobile website.
Providing better offline functionality was one of the highlighted areas from the research done by the New Readers team in Mexico, Nigeria, and India. The teams created a prototype for mobile PDFs which was evaluated by user research and community feedback. The prototype evaluation received positive feedback and results, so development continued.
For the initial deployment, the feature will be available to Google Chrome browsers on Android. Support for other mobile browsers to come in the future. For Chrome, the feature will use the native Android print functionality. Users can choose to download a webpage as a PDF. Mobile print styles will be used for these PDFs to ensure optimal readability for smaller screens.
The feature is available starting Wednesday, Nov 15. For more information, see the project page on MediaWiki.org.
Tack!

WikiScienceCompetition 2017
[redigera | redigera wikitext]Hi! Wiki Science Competition has started, yesterday a banner appeared on enwiki in USA making it officially "global", as far as I know (too many information to handle). Sitenotices have appeared for sure in Spain, Austria, Russian Federation and Ukraine, and Italy will be join very soon with a massive national campaign.
As a member of the academic committee I did my best to reduce the gap between countries both in the composition of the juries and now in the outreach. I did inform many platforms (enwiki, eswiki, frwiki) during the preparation of the event, now I am informing all national institutions, associations and federations of science and technology I can contact, especially those located in countries without national juries (so, also in Sweden and Finland) and I am posting notes on LinkedIn groups everyday... and so on and so on. That's why I am here.
We are preparing banners for many countries (I can write something short in Swedish, you can see it) but on meta they say it is not wise to use them, so there is a banner there if you want to use it on svwiki directly for few days. In the end you are very "centered" wiki, and the banner is not country-specific in your case. Plus, one of the organizer is actually paid by a Swedish university, and one of the juror works there, that's why I naively tough of you before other countries.
Otherwise, if you have social media and you want to inform your friends and colleagues, the twitter hashtags are #WSC2017, #WikiScience2017, #WikiScience and here you can find a list of images from 2015 as an example. Next time I'll visit my family in Sweden I will offer you a coffee.
Thank you in advance and whatever you do (join, inform, ignore) have fun!--Alexmar983 (diskussion) 3 november 2017 kl. 15.14 (CET)

- I left my message in English because I did the same last year at the village pump. The request is: it would be nice to have a sitenotice to inform sv-N people about WSC. We prepared an international competition with an international jury but despite that it seems that we can't get access easily to inform everyone. They treat us like WLM, which is not totally correct, because the academia is a much more integrated network. So now this category and this category are empty after 5 days. Young researchers cannot access a competition where they could win a prize. And I am sending tons of emails everywhere to compensate an "unnatural" unbalance. Cui prodest? Nobody. So we can get few days of banner? I can find some alternative way to enter countries like Switzerland or Germany and reach people but it will takes weeks before Scandinavia start to be integrated. If I don't get any banner, and the emails don't work... than I think I will write to national newspapers, I don't know. I have to try them all, it is a little bit my responsability. My family is kinda half Swedish, I am therefore quite sorry really about this situation.--Alexmar983 (diskussion) 5 november 2017 kl. 09.34 (CET)
- Messages in English are welcome, as per the top of the page (and the top of Wikipedia:Bybrunnen). As for the banner, we already have the "Asian Month" scheduled for november, and banners should be kept at a sensible minimum. For other editors I can point out there is a discussion at the metawiki: meta:CentralNotice/Request#Wiki Science Competition 2017 (November 1-30). There is also a calendar for upcoming banners: meta:CentralNotice/Calendar. /NH 7 november 2017 kl. 11.12 (CET)
- The meta link is also in my first message, right? In any case, while for Asian countries is ok to have banner after November (because they close on the 15th of December), most of Europe is supposed to be ready by the 30th of November. Considering that after one or two week almost everyone would have seen the Asian banner except a limited amount of newcommers, replacing the established message for few days will probably not affect its visibility.
- BTW, our competition was supposed to be in November-December since 2015, we didn't arrive last minute. We were informed about the Asian month quite late, maybe chapters involved in both should have paid more attention. it's just that while the Asian month is not relevant on many wikis, we are potentially related to all the wikis, so it takes much more time to reach all of them. Statistically, certain areas come later. We don't expect all countries to be the same level in the end, we just want to avoid some countries remain at zero. And to avoid that if we don't get few days of banner we can only send dozens of mail to the academia, try to start some effect on social media, or contact the media. I am not a fan of the banner, I always assumed we could have get for few days, enough to start to inform motivated and competent users.--Alexmar983 (diskussion) 8 november 2017 kl. 01.46 (CET)

NH the Asian month has finished, the upload from Sweden showed low quality, we postponed the final date of two week and now WSC2017 ends on December, the 15th. The banner is still ready at the link on commons, can we put it now? Just enough days to have at least a national finalist.--Alexmar983 (diskussion) 3 december 2017 kl. 12.57 (CET)

Their work board is available in Phabricator. Du hittar länkar till föregående veckas slutförda arbetsuppgifter på mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor, and improving the visual diff tool.
Senaste ändringar
[redigera | redigera wikitext]- The 2017 wikitext editor is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. It has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Recently, the 2017 wikitext editor opened fastest for most edits, and the 2010 WikiEditor was fastest for some edits.
- The visual diff tool was developed for the visual editor. It is now available to all users of the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. When you review your changes, you can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. You can also enable the new Beta Feature for "Visual diffs". The Beta Feature lets you use the visual diff tool to view other people's edits on page histories and Special:RecentChanges. [1]
- Wikitext syntax highlighting is available as a Beta Feature for both the 2017 wikitext editor and the 2010 wikitext editor. [2]
[redigera | redigera wikitext]- The team will talk about editing tools at an upcoming Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meeting.
- The
<references />
block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. NOTICE: EducationProgram extension is being deprecated
Tack!.
Over the years many issues have been discovered from our engineering colleagues regarding the Education Extension, including security concerns. For this reason, and with a viable alternative platform available, we are starting the process to deprecate the extension and having it uninstalled where it has been activated. This includes this wiki Special:Courses.
This means that the following steps will be taken:
- New programs are discouraged from using the extension and encouraged to use the Programs and Events Dashboard.
- Current ongoing programs will be supported, until the month of June, 2018.
- On June 30, 2018, the Education Extension will be shut down.
- If you are still running an education program that uses the Education Extension, please take the appropriate measures and also reach out to your colleagues and communities so they are also aware.
It should be noted that data of previous programs that ran on the Education Extension will remain safe, and we are working on documenting how to access that data.
Thus, we invite all Education Program Leaders (and users of the Education Extension) to take the online training for the dashboard so that you can benefit from this tool and make your work easier.
Did you know you can also use the P&E Dashboard at edit-a-thons, writing competitions, and other Wiki-based activities? More training courses for the dashboard are available here, so take a look!
Do you need to communicate with us about this?
- If you have comments or questions, please reach out to the Education Team at educationwikimedia.org, or the Programs and Events Dashboard group at dashboardwikimedia.org.
- If you use Phabricator, you can also go to: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T125618.
- You are also welcome to share questions and comments on outreach.wikimedia.org.

Update to ICU Unicode library
[redigera | redigera wikitext]Starting on April 9th we'll migrate the servers running the MediaWiki application servers to a new release of the ICU Unicode library (w:en:International Components for Unicode) (from version 52 to 57). This unblocks some future work on upgrading the servers to a new Operating System release and will also allow the use of improved internationalisation in the future (as wikis will then be able to use features introduced by the new ICU release such as new collation definitions, and allows us to use a more recent version of Unicode in MediaWiki).
This migration will cause some unavoidable temporary user-visible impact: The sorting of some category pages will be distorted – all pages which have been updated with the new software version will use the new sorting while untouched pages still use the old sorting. As such, we need to run a maintenance script to update the sorting for old entries.
The distortions may last from a few hours (on medium-sized wikis), up to a day (on the largest wikis), and a few days on English Wikipedia. The start-time will depend upon when the migration script reaches each wiki.
This affects a number of large wikis (including eight out of the ten biggest Wikipedias). The detailed list and the task for the technical implementation is at phab:T189295.

Update on page issues on mobile web
[redigera | redigera wikitext]Update on page issues on mobile web
The Readers web team has recently begun working on exposing issue templates on the mobile website. Currently, details about issues with page content are generally hidden on the mobile website. This leaves readers unaware of the reliability of the pages they are reading. The goal of this project is to improve awareness of particular issues within an article on the mobile web. We will do this by changing the visual styling of page issues.
So far, we have drafted a proposal on the design and implementation of the project. We were also able to run user testing on the proposed designs. The tests so far have positive results. Here is a quick summary of what we learned:
- The new treatment increases awareness of page issues among participants. This is true particularly when they are in a more evaluative/critical mode.
- Page issues make sense to readers and they understand how they work
- Readers care about page issues and consider them important
- Readers had overwhelmingly positive sentiments towards Wikipedia associated with learning about page issues
Our next step would be to start implementing these changes. We wanted to reach out to you for any concerns, thoughts, and suggestions you might have before beginning development. Please visit the project page where we have more information and mockups of how this may look. Please leave feedback on the talk page.

New user group for editing sitewide CSS/JS
Hi all!
To improve the security of our readers and editors, permission handling for CSS/JS pages has changed. (These are pages like MediaWiki:Common.css
and MediaWiki:Vector.js
which contain code that is executed in the browsers of users of the site.)
A new user group, interface-admin
, has been created.
Starting four weeks from now, only members of this group will be able edit CSS/JS pages that they do not own (that is, any page ending with .css
or .js
that is either in the MediaWiki:
namespace or is another user's user subpage).
You can learn more about the motivation behind the change here.
Please add users who need to edit CSS/JS to the new group (this can be done the same way new administrators are added, by stewards or local bureaucrats). This is a dangerous permission; a malicious user or a hacker taking over the account of a careless interface-admin can abuse it in far worse ways than admin permissions could be abused. Please only assign it to users who need it, who are trusted by the community, and who follow common basic password and computer security practices (use strong passwords, do not reuse passwords, use two-factor authentication if possible, do not install software of questionable origin on your machine, use antivirus software if that's a standard thing in your environment).
Thanks!

Editing of sitewide CSS/JS is only possible for interface administrators from now
Hi all,
as announced previously, permission handling for CSS/JS pages has changed: only members of the interface-admin
(Gränssnittsadministratörer) group, and a few highly privileged global groups such as stewards, can edit CSS/JS pages that they do not own (that is, any page ending with .css or .js that is either in the MediaWiki: namespace or is another user's user subpage). This is done to improve the security of readers and editors of Wikimedia projects. More information is available at Creation of separate user group for editing sitewide CSS/JS. If you encounter any unexpected problems, please contact me or file a bug.
Thanks!

/User:Johan(WMF) (talk)
