Something Bizarre

[redigera wikitext]

I know this is probably humourous and you might laugh at me, but it's something I want fixed. Whenever I attempt to look up something at the English Wikipedia, I get another site instead. This doesn't happen anywhere else online, but it's been happening for months to the point where I believe somebody sabotaged my IP address from being able to visit there. I know there are a few users at the English Wikipedia who detest me, but that is just going too far and I demand something to be done about it. I know Mats doesn't like me, but I am not contributing anything and haven't even thought of doing so for the longest time now. Please find out what the hell is going on. I don't like how it appears to be a fellow Wikipedia user that has found some way to disrupt my connection to that website. These are the sites that I am pissed off at seeing any time I look up a topic on Google and click on the English Wikipedia. Blocking them hasn't enabled me to see Wikipedia, just prevented me from seeing these sites:

If you open a command prompt and type "ping en.wikipedia.org"(return), what IP number does your machine try to reach? Is it 207.142.131.248 or is it different? If it's different, the problem lies not with wikipedia but with your computer or ISP. Swedish pedia is on another ip, which might explain why you can still reach this page (wikipedia also decides content based on the domain name, so substituting the IP number won't solve your problem - you'll just end up at an undecided language pedia, which won't do you any good). If typing the above command returns the correct IP (and successfully pings it), I assume what you're experiencing is a lock-out (or a hack, seems to me, of a kind that wikipedia should not be engaged in). I have no powers on the english pedia, but since this behaviour if caused by wikipedia seems out of line, I will help you look it up. // OlofE 4 augusti 2004 kl.01.10 (CEST)

Yes, it appears to have returned the same IP as the advertisement. Kände Aulansson 5 augusti 2004 kl.18.55 (CEST)

Try to check your hosts file in a text editor, it's located in "C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc" or something similar depending on your windows version (search for the file). As default there should only be an entry for "127.0.0.1      localhost", if there is some other hosts added just remove them and see if it works better. If that doesn't help, i don't really know what to do but the problem seems to be on your computer. bbx 4 augusti 2004 kl.05.55 (CEST)
Yes - the file is named "hosts" - it has no filename extension.

I have a few corrupt files, so it's difficult to determine that way. Kände Aulansson 5 augusti 2004 kl.21.27 (CEST)

I think you have somekind of spyware-malware problem, try these anti-programs: SpyBot, Ad-Aware + a must have is SpywareBlaster it protects you from getting any spyware.//softssa 4 augusti 2004 kl.12.35 (CEST)

Thanks very much everybody, there was spyware and adware all over my PC. I hope no spy/adware is piggybacking the detector/eliminator program, because that would truly drag my day. I am now able to enter the English version, although I still think it has something to do with a Wikipedia User. Kände Aulansson 5 augusti 2004 kl.21.27 (CEST)

Glad it seems to have worked out - the sources softssa pointed to are genuine and the applications are safe to use from those sources. If they fixed it, it was indeed something done to your computer, on the network translation level - the "hosts" file mentioned above is the simplest place to check for those things. As for what may have planted this in your system, it is possible to plant such an attack in a wikipedia page and trigger it by your login ID - I'm not saying this has been the case here but I do find it odd indeed that one user only would find such a malconfiguration, and targeted at just that specific address - I've never heard of wikipedia being targeted that way from outside before. If you find anything else that's odd in the context, do let us know. Personal feelings aside, I certainly think all administrators here agree that covert sabotage is not acceptable and we hope that is not what has happened here. If that had happened, it would be a sad day. Good luck, // OlofE 6 augusti 2004 kl.02.24 (CEST)

It's too bad that, despite earlier eradication of the problem, it appears to have resurfaced, despite my possession of a spy/adware killer. I will try to get rid of it once again.

Mats Halldin 9 augusti 2004 kl.01.12 (CEST)

I am not a troll. Are you accusing me of trolling? All I did was ask to fix a problem that's affecting Wikipedia and it could be sabotage. I don't have proper Swedish grammar and so I'm not writing it down in your tongue. If you have a problem with that, please tell me in English. Kände Aulansson 9 augusti 2004 kl.01.15 (CEST)

AHA, maybe it was you, MATS! Maybe you did this to me because you hate me so much! It's not proper behaviour to tamper with Wikipedia, no matter how you feel.
